Osaka enjoyed great prosperity as the nation's center of commerce in the 16th century. Symbolic of this prosperity, Osaka's festivals became increasingly gorgeous and grander in scale. Many of the famous festivals of Osaka were established during this period.
Girls who offer fukuzasa are called fukumusume, meaning women who bring fortune.
Toka Ebisu (10th Day Ebisu Festival) January 9, 10 and 11 (All day)
The style used today for the Toka Ebisu (10th Day Ebisu Festival) at Imamiya-Ebisu Shrine was established in the period between the 17th and the 19th centuries. This popular festival attracts more than one million visitors over three days, where fukuzasa, or decorated bamboo branches that are believed to bring fortune, are sold by fukumusume, or fortune women who have been selected especially for this festival. It is believed that by putting up fukuzasa in shops and offices, the year's business will be successful.
